Interior and exterior of the Palace of Children and Youth Creativity
The artistic decoration of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth (then known as the Palace of Pioneers) became one of the most celebrated achievements of Ada Rybachuk and Volodymyr Melnychenko. Their monumental mosaic panels enrich both the building's interiors and the square in front of it, creating a harmonious contrast with its transparent glass façades and the clarity of its modernist architecture.
Rather than following the conventional Soviet "Pioneer" iconography, the artists turned to the visual language of Ukrainian folk art. Their compositions reveal the influence of renowned folk artists such as Maria Prymachenko, Hanna Sobachko, Paraska Vlasenko, and others. Rich colours and flowing rhythms filled the Palace with an atmosphere of joy, imagination, and creative inspiration.
The Palace was officially inaugurated on 23 May 1965. Although the architects received the USSR State Prize for the project, the artists' names were omitted from the list of laureates. Their independent views and reputation as nonconformist artists were considered too politically risky and could have jeopardized the entire project.
In front of the Palace stands the unique mosaic fountain Sun, Stars and Constellations, designed by Rybachuk and Melnychenko. Covering more than 700 square metres, it is one of the largest mosaic fountains in Ukraine. In 2017, on the initiative of the Palace and with the participation of Volodymyr Melnychenko, the fountain underwent a comprehensive restoration. In 2019, after nearly forty years without water, it came back to life.
Inside the Palace, the artists created dozens of monumental mosaics, including:

- Nestor the Chronicler and Ivan Fedorov
- Boy with a Squirrel
- Kyiv – Hero City
- The Magic Violin (dedicated to Maria Prymachenko)
- Sunflowers
- Oh, My Little Songs
- and many others.
Through their masterful use of mosaic, majolica, concrete relief, and repoussé metalwork, Rybachuk and Melnychenko transformed the Palace into a true school of beauty and creativity for generations of children and young people.
